YEAR 5

AUTUMN TERM 2019

Welcome to Year 5. Our teacher is Miss Byron and our teaching assistant is Miss Hamilton.

Year 5 Autumn 2019 Class Leaflet

Homework

In Year 5, we are encouraged to take responsibility for our own home learning. We are able to challenge ourselves and choose different tasks to complete at home. We can select from the tasks provided each week by our teacher and those on the Learning Without Limits task cards.

We each have a specific day of the week on which our homework is due. We complete our loyalty cards to gain points towards house points, Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher awards and even extra break times!

Topic - Inventors

As part of our topic, we have been learning about a wide range of inventors throughout history such as Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and Steve Jobs. We also explored some of the work of Leonardo Da Vinci, including his Vitruvian Man theories. We measured ourselves and discovered that our arm span was the same as our height.

We also learned about Marie Curie and her work developing the understanding of x-rays. We created x-ray art thinking about all the different bones in our hands. We also wrote and starred in our own news reports interviewing Marie Curie, questioning her about her life and her inventions.

Science - Changes of State

In Science, we have been planning and carrying out a range of experiments to learn about how materials can change from one state to another. We have investigated how materials such as chocolate, ice, vinegar, baking soda, eggs and sugar can change if they are heated, cooled or mixed together. During the topic, we have developed our understanding of relevant scientific vocabulary. We are now more confident in using a range of words including dissolving, solvent, solution, solute, condensing, boiling and evaporating.

Science - Forces

Our new topic in Science is Forces. We are learning about the different types of forces and how they affect the world around us. We started by looking at gravity and air resistance and the effect they have on falling objects. We learnt that two objects of different mass fall at the same rate on the moon, because there is no air resistance.

We found that air resistance is useful if you have a parachute and we experimented to find out which was the best parachute that created the most air resistance and got our bears to the ground safely.

 Spring Term

At the start of the Year we went to Wycombe Wanderers Football club to take part in a 'Show Racism the Red Card event'. We learnt that there are and infinite number of skins tones and that a hate crime is treated more seriously that a regular crime.  We also went on a tour of the stadium which was very exciting!

Space

Our Topic for the Spring term is Space! We have learnt the order of the planets and lots of facts about them. we created planet top trump cards so we could compare.

We have been thinking about what life is like for astronauts living on the International Space Station and how it is different from our lives on Earth. The main differences we found were that there is no gravity, there is no night and day and that they have to swallow their toothpaste when they brush their teeth!

Maths

In Maths we have been learning about fractions. In our first lesson we looked at pieces of pizza, cakes and cookies to decide what the fractions were if any were the same amount and therefore an equivalent fraction.
