Welcome Back Year 5s!

Well done Year 5 for a fantastic start to the new school year. Everyone has settled in really well and made a really positive start to the year. Keep up the good work!

We have started running the Daily Mile. Everyday we run or walk around the playground for 10 mins and try to keep going! We are already so proud of how much progress we have made doing this. Some of us can do as many at 13 laps without stopping!

In PE this term we are looking at developing skills used for ball games. In this lesson we took the same game and added our own rules and equipment!

In science our topic for this half term is Changing Materials. We have learnt the differences between solids, liquids and gases and how to change reversibly between them. This week we did an experiment with vinegar and bicarbonate of soda to look at chemical reactions. We mixed them together the and we observed that the balloon blew up because of the bubbles and gas produced in the reaction.

For Black History Month we learnt about the 4 black ladies who worked at NASA in the 1960's. They did all of the calculations for the scientists and worked out the trajectories for the rockets and how to make sure that the astronauts landed safely. They were know as human computers and they are only being recognised for their incredible work now.

We imagined we were one of the ladies called Kathrine Johnson, and what it would feel like to work at NASA at this time. We were shocked at the discrimination that she faced, such as having to use a separate toilet over an hour away!

We wrote diary entries for a day in the life of Katherine Johnson.

We also learnt about a black inventor called Lewis Lattimer, who help to invent both the Telephone and the lightbulb. But he gets no credit for his work, he in fact made sure that Thomas Edison got all of the credit for his inventions.

We wrote some questions that we might like to ask Lewis Lattimer, then acted out an interveiw with him to see what he would respond.

Remembrance

We read some poems about the soldiers in WW1 and decided to write our own versions to help remember them on Poppy day.

In Science we are discovering the forces all around us in our new topic of  Feel the Force! We conducted an investigation to look at the effects of gravity and air resistance on paper spinners.
