Spring Term:

Pancake Day:

Year 2 have been learning all about Pancake Day also known as Shrove Tuesday. We learnt that people eat pancakes to get rid of an indulgences in the house before the beginning of Lent. Traditionally pancakes were eaten on this day to use up these foods before the 40-day fasting season of lent began. We were extremely lucky to have made our very own pancakes using flour, eggs and milk. The best part was eating them!

 Drumming:

Over the spring term the children have been learning how to play the drums with Mrs Lee. The children have learnt different rhythms and patterns and are developing their understanding of their body posture when playing their drums as well as learning how to be in time.

E-Safety Day

On Tuesday 11th February year 2 participated in 'Safer Internet Day'. We learnt all about the importance of staying safe online and the importance of always informing an adult when we feel unsafe online. We made e-safety posters, avatars, used iPads safely and finally we gave instructions to bee-bots.

Autumn Term:

Fire Brigade Visit:

As part of our learning about leaders in the community. Year 2 had a special visit from the Fire Brigade. They reminded us on how to stay safe in case of a fire and how to get help. We asked the firefighters questions linked to their jobs and were extremely lucky to be allowed to go inside the fire engine. We learnt that the fire engine isn't equipped for just fires but car crashes, floods and trapped animals. Miss Iltaf also had to try on the heavy clothes that the firefighters have to wear when fighting fires.

Whipsnade Zoo:

On Wednesday 16th October Year 2 set off on an exciting adventure to Whipsnade Zoo. We started the journey off with a coach ride, we were extremely chatty and excited to see all the animals. The first animals we saw were the chimpanzees. One of the chimpanzees gave us all a fright by jumping towards us but he was just being friendly and wanted to play. We also saw different types of fish, butterflies, farm animals, sea lions and tigers. After seeing the tigers we all started to get very hungry so at 11am we decided to have our lunch under a shelter. As we were eating our lunch we saw a tractor carry hay across to the farm animals. What a fun job he had! After our lunch, we set off to see the elephants, flamingos, giraffes and lions. The last animals we saw were the penguins who were busy swimming away in the lovely blue water.. Finally we took a class photo and walked slowly towards the coach. We were all tired by now but stayed very chatty on the journey back home! What a fantastic day we had!

Science:

We have been learning all about living things and their habitats. We used the phrase 'MRS NERG' to learn what the seven life processes are and sorted living, non-living and dead objects into the right category. We decided to observe different habitats whilst looking for insects. We found lots of ants hidden within the wet grass, woodlouse under pieces of wood and a single beetle under leaf litter. We discussed why different habitats are better for particular animals. Here are some of our pictures from our habitat hunt!

Maths:

The children have been busy in maths developing their understanding of numbers up to 100. We have been making numbers using different concrete resources such as dienes, numicon and cubes. We have been practising partitioning our numbers into tens and ones using the part whole model. Additionally, we have been comparing sets of numbers using the <,> and = symbols.

MFL Day

As part of languages day, year 2 had visits from Mrs Harwood, Mr Bowden and Mrs Nawaz-Khan who taught us Spanish, Welsh and Urdu. In class, we learnt polish with the help of some of the children who speak polish at home. We learnt how to say our numbers, days of the week and sang head, shoulders knees and toes in polish. At break time, there was a French café, We said ''Bonjour'' and ate some delicious croissants and brioche with a lovely cup of juice. What an extremely fun day we had!
